As part of its strategic engagement with key democracy and governance institutions, the Youth Quota in Parliament advocacy team paid a working visit to the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) in Abuja, where it met with the Executive Director and his team to present the objectives and legislative framework of the Youth Quota in Parliament Bill.
During the meeting, the Executive Director commended the advocacy team for championing a bold and forward-looking constitutional reform aimed at expanding youth representation in Nigeria’s legislative institutions. He acknowledged the importance of the initiative and reaffirmed PLAC’s commitment to supporting legislative reforms that promote inclusive governance and democratic participation.
Drawing from PLAC’s experience in supporting the Not Too Young To Run constitutional amendment campaign, which culminated in the enactment of the law in 2018, the Executive Director shared valuable insights into the legislative advocacy process, stakeholder engagement strategies, and the importance of sustained coalition building in achieving constitutional reforms.
He assured the delegation that PLAC, as one of Nigeria’s leading legislative advocacy organisations, would support the Youth Quota in Parliament campaign within its institutional mandate. He further pledged to provide technical assistance and policy support where necessary to strengthen the quality of the proposed legislation and enhance advocacy efforts throughout the legislative process.
The advocacy team expressed appreciation for PLAC’s encouragement and willingness to support the initiative, describing the organisation’s experience and expertise in legislative reforms as invaluable to the campaign. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continued collaboration in advancing constitutional reforms that will guarantee greater youth representation and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
